Francesc Fontbona, member of Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi
"Modernisme" is the name given to modernist Catalan art produced from the end of the nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth century. It was not exactly a style, but an attitude of modernity that manifested itself through naturalism, symbolism, or expressionism. In this lecture, Francesc Fontbona, member of Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, will address modernist works in the Meadows Museum collection, including paintings by Catalan modernists, such as Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Joaquim Mir Trinxet, Luis Graner y Arrufi, Ramón Casas, Claudio Castelucho y Diana, and artists like Darío de Regoyos y Valdés, who, while not Catalan, lived and died in Catalonia.

Artist Roma Ribera (1848 - 1935) | Catalan Genre Painter | WAA
Roma Ribera i Cirera was born 13 December 1848, Barcelona, died 29 May 1935, Barcelona. He was a Catalan genre painter. He specialized in contemporary scenes from upper-class social events, rendered in meticulous detail, but also did numerous scenes from life in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Once he had established himself, he settled in Paris. At a time when most artists were attracted to impressionism, he found inspiration in the works of James Tissot and Alfred Stevens. In 1878, he enjoyed great success at the Exposition Universelle. This enabled him to retain Adolphe Goupil as his agent. To maximize his income, he chose to solicit clients from the upper classes, portraying their activities and possessions.

Antoni Tàpies
Antoni Tàpies i Puig, 1st Marquess of Tàpies was a Catalan painter, sculptor and art theorist, who became one of the most famous European artists of his generation. Antoni Tàpies Puig was born in Barcelona on December 13, 1923. His father was a lawyer and Catalan Nationalist who served briefly with the Republican government.
Tàpies studied at the German School of Barcelona. After studying law for 3 years, he devoted himself from 1943 onwards only to his painting. He lived mainly in Barcelona, Tàpies died in early February 2012. He was 88.

Antoni Tàpies i Puig, 1st Marquess of Tàpies was a Catalan painter, sculptor and art theorist, who became one of the most famous European artists of his generation. Antoni Tàpies Puig was born in Barcelona on December 13, 1923. His father was a lawyer and Catalan Nationalist who served briefly with the Republican government.
Tàpies studied at the German School of Barcelona. After studying law for 3 years, he devoted himself from 1943 onwards only to his painting. He lived mainly in Barcelona, Tàpies died in early February 2012. He was 88.
